New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: For your side-projects, how do you avoid the 'money' question?

Ask HN: For your side-projects, how do you avoid the 'money' question? 4 by sh87 | 3 comments on Hacker News. I've been working on side projects for the past 3-4 years on whatever caught my fancy and have thoroughly enjoyed experience and the rabbit holes some of them have led me into. I like it and I feel I'm at a point where I want to get more people involved in side projects. But, any discussion about these projects with (nearly) anyone ends with 'How will you make money'. I don't have a way to avoid or answer that question without losing people's interest. I'm curious about how others handle that one. To be clear, I do not work on side projects for money. Neither do I intend to. Thats what my day job is for. I just want to involve more minds interested in similar things that I'm racking my head against.

Ask HN: Do you have a side project you want to sell? 13 by duked | 16 comments on Hacker News. A similar thread gets posted every now and then. I think it's time for an update. If you have any side projects that you've built and that you no longer have time for, list them here and let's see if others want to buy it from you. I'm personally interested in anything security related (SaaS preferred).

Ask HN: How do you stay disciplined in the long run? 479 by djangovm | 155 comments on Hacker News. My typical cycle of execution is something like this Find out something through HN/Reddit/Other medium --> Get motivated --> Get good knowledge about it through research --> See others succeed, get motivated a bit more --> Execute and get to, say, 25-50% of the journey --> Get bored --> Abandon --> be passive for couple of months --> repeat. Be it creating new websites or new products (probably the reason I have not launched something as a personal project, despite having tried like 10-11 of them with varying degree of success), weight loss journey, running, meditation etc. I have tried breaking things into manageable chunks and then taking them one-by-one, or through methodologies like GTD, or by making others accountable (tough to find someone who takes personal interest in what I would do; also, I have strongly come to perceive myself as being driven by exte

New ask Hacker News story: Tell HN: Hours left to protest ICANN's plan to uncap prices of legacy TLDs

Tell HN: Hours left to protest ICANN's plan to uncap prices of legacy TLDs 70 by wolfgang42 | 9 comments on Hacker News. Starting with .org, .info, and .biz, ICANN is planning to eliminate the 10% annual cap on increases of prices that TLD registry operators can charge for domains, both new and renewals. These TLD registries have a monopoly on the entire TLD (they're who your registrar buys the domain from when you order it), so you can't just switch to a cheaper company without throwing out your entire domain and starting over from scratch on a new one. Large companies may be able to withstand large jumps in prices, but small businesses and individuals will bear the brunt of any increases that occur, increasing the already considerable centralization of the Internet. PIR (who runs .org) already makes $90 million annually from registrations, in exchange for maintaining a database and running some DNS servers. ICANN is currently holding a public comment period, which clos
