City activist Anarjit Chauhan has found that the main sewage channel at Vashi Sector 17 has been deliberately choked by dumping earth and debris into it. He has now complained to the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) and is questioning the civic body as to how this illegal debris dumping could be overlooked by the civic staff. He has gathered information that earth was dumped into the main intertidal free flowing sewage channel for a Rs7croreproject to construct a road arm which will cut the time required to reach the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. However, for this project a ramp should have been built at the site and not choke the sewage channel by dumping debris into it. He further stated in June 2022 the minutes of the meeting of the State Environment Impact Assessment (SEIA) had noted that a ramp should be built on the spot at Vashi so that the free flow of water along this channel is not disturbed. Hence, stringent action must be taken against the NMMC contractor and also the civic officials who allowed this illegal debris dumping to take place. The City Engineer, Sanjay Desai, told The Indian Express that he will ask his department to check on this issue and take appropriate action if any violation has occurred in this regard. Chauhan added
